Series background & context

Hockey Bros is Beth Bolden's male-male romance trilogy about the Barnes brothers and their shared dream of playing professional hockey on the same team. Ethan, Charlie and Avery have wanted that future since childhood. Joining the New York Bandits makes it possible, but the books also follow the relationships that develop around their careers. Family loyalty, team politics and attraction make success more complicated than simply finding a place on the roster.

Ethan opens with the youngest brother beginning his rookie season alongside Charlie. Having a brother as a roommate and teammate is part of the life Ethan imagined, yet his attention soon turns toward defenseman Hank Tucker. Hank has spent two years working to establish himself with the Bandits and believes he needs concentration above all else. An appealing young forward with a famous surname isn't part of his plan, even though Ethan has been on his mind since development camp.

Their different temperaments give the opening romance its shape. Ethan's sunny persistence meets Hank's determination to keep his distance, while Hank also has to reconsider an attraction he didn't expect to feel toward another man. The hockey setting makes avoiding one another difficult and gives both men something important beyond romance to protect. Their private connection develops alongside the practical ambition of making the team and performing well enough to stay there.

Sharing a team brings the brothers closer without simplifying their lives.

In Charlie, Avery's mid-season arrival should complete the family dream, but it also increases pressure on captain Max Meier. The team needs to improve, and Max's leadership is being measured against its newest addition. Charlie has long been in love with his best friend Max, without making those feelings public. A leaked video changes that privacy, forcing both men to confront something that has existed alongside their professional relationship for years.

Avery turns to the oldest brother's attraction to teammate Matt Daniels, known as Danny. Playing with Ethan and Charlie is everything Avery hoped for, but Danny's hostility complicates his welcome. Danny insists he is straight and doesn't want Avery interfering with the team, while Avery finds it increasingly hard to ignore him. With a playoff run approaching, their personal friction has to coexist with the need to work together on the ice.

Read Ethan, Charlie and Avery in order to follow the brothers' reunion and the Bandits' changing season. Each book centres on a different romance, while the continuing team setting connects their stories. Expect adult sports romance, attraction between teammates and relationships that challenge the characters' assumptions about themselves. The trilogy's shared emotional starting point is a family dream, but each brother also needs room to build a private life of his own.
