Hisham Matar Books in Order

In Libya in 1979, nine-year-old Suleiman begins to notice disturbing gaps in his father’s business travels and his mother’s stories. Political repression enters his small world, forcing him to confront secrets and dangers he cannot fully understand.

After his mother dies, Nuri becomes infatuated with the woman his father later marries. When his dissident father is abducted, grief and jealousy give way to a search for understanding the man whose absence now defines their lives.

After completing a memoir about his missing father, Hisham Matar spends a month in Siena studying its paintings. Encounters with the city, its residents and medieval artworks become reflections on grief, intimacy and the ways art can offer consolation.

A Libyan student is wounded during a London protest, leaving him unable to return safely home. Over decades in exile, friendship with a fellow dissident and an admired writer sustains him while revolution tests their different ideas of loyalty and belonging.
