Series background & context

High Sierra Sweethearts takes readers into the Sierra Nevada, where steep trails, sudden snowstorms, and lingering guilt shape three connected romances. The series begins with a wagon train attack and follows the survivors as they try to build new futures in the shadow of old violence.

In The Accidental Guardian, Trace Riley has made himself a self-appointed guardian of a dangerous stretch of trail after surviving a massacre as a boy. When he discovers the ruins of another wagon train and rescues Deborah Harkness, her younger sister, and two toddlers, he brings them to his isolated ranch. Winter snows and the lingering threat of the attackers force Trace and Deborah into close quarters where trust and affection have time to grow.

The Reluctant Warrior focuses on Union officer Cameron Scott, who comes to the mountains to retrieve his daughter and nephew. The children are terrified of him, and their caretaker, Gwen Harkness, has little reason to believe he’ll be a good father. A blizzard strands them together, outside enemies close in, and Cameron has to learn how to be gentle without losing the backbone that’s kept him alive.

In The Unexpected Champion, a Pinkerton investigation, an abduction, and a case of mistaken identity throw John McCall and Penny Scott together. Forced to pretend to be married while evading criminals and the elements, they’re pushed into a partnership neither of them planned on.

Throughout the trilogy, Connealy blends snowbound cabins, fast chases through rocky passes, and tight-knit frontier communities. The High Sierra setting gives these stories a slightly wilder, more survivalist edge while still delivering the humor and faith threads her readers expect.
