There is a little more wear and weight in these mysteries, too. Hart still writes clean, traditional puzzles, but Henrie O's cases often involve family damage, long grudges, and people carrying old losses into the present. The tone is not grim, but it is less airy than the bookstore books. You feel more of the cost when secrets finally come out.

Henrie O is one of Hart's best ideas.

She lets the author write from the perspective of a woman who has already lived a full life and is not interested in nonsense. That gives the books a plainspoken authority readers often love. Henrie O can be compassionate, but she is never sentimental in a sloppy way. She has seen too much for that.

If you want a good entry point, start with Dead Man's Island. It introduces Henrie O in a classic closed-circle setup and was later adapted into a television movie. From there, the series keeps its balance between travel mystery and character-driven investigation. If Annie Darling is the book lover and Bailey Ruth is the rule-breaking ghost, Henrie O is the seasoned pro who knows that bad people count on silence, and that is exactly why she keeps talking.
