Hemlock Academy takes place in a world where supernatural abilities are part of daily life, but power, status, and family expectations still make a mess of things. The series begins with Gabriella, a young woman whose magic is far more complicated than she has let anyone see.

Gabriella is a bodysmith with the ability to draw on sexual energy, but she is also a conduit, someone who forms magical and romantic bonds that strengthen the people connected to her. When her father discovers the truth, he sends her to Hemlock Academy, the elite school he runs. Gabby would rather follow her own plans than become a curiosity at a school full of people ready to judge her.

She also has six mate marks to contend with. That would be enough pressure without bullies, complicated new relationships, and the threat of the Night, a force that wants the magic she carries. The early books follow Gabby as she finds partners, learns the reach of her abilities, and realizes that hiding may not protect the people she loves.

The original arc runs from First Addition through Four Trials. It mixes academy life, fated mates, magical politics, action, explicit romance, and a very silly sense of humor. The books work best in order because the relationship group and the larger conflict build from one installment to the next.

Later, Hemlock or Bust shifts the spotlight toward Delaney, Gabriella's daughter. Delaney wants her own chance to attend Hemlock, find her place, and possibly find her mates. Her magic has a habit of getting out of hand, however, which makes her arrival at school anything but quiet. Six Ways to Break, Seven is Swell, and Eight Embers continue her side of the family story.

This is a series for readers who want an adult paranormal academy romance with a large, evolving relationship group. Start with First Addition for Gabriella's story, then continue in publication order. Delaney's books land better once the original group and the world around Hemlock are familiar.
