Series background & context
The Hellman Brothers series returns to Auburn Hill, a small town better known as Hell. The nickname suits the family at the center of these romances, at least on the surface. The Hellman brothers are protective, stubborn, and good at getting under people's skin, but each book gives one of them a chance to grow up a little.
The series opens with Grumpy As Hell. Ace Hellman is a firefighter and a lifelong source of irritation for Addy, a free-spirited yoga instructor he has known since childhood. When they are forced to work together on a first-aid class, old antagonism turns into a very different kind of attention.
Auburn Hill is one of those towns where a person's history follows them everywhere. Neighbors know the families, remember the childhood grudges, and notice any new romance before the couple has fully admitted it to themselves. That makes the setting a big part of the fun.
Each book follows a different Hellman brother. Bro Code Hell, Friend Zone Hell, Cougar From Hell, and Falling First Hell keep the focus on new couples while continuing the family banter and community connections. The brothers' shared history gives the books an ongoing thread, even as every romance gets its own ending.
The tone is sexy, funny, and emotionally direct. These are not polished, perfect heroes. They can be grumpy, overprotective, stuck in old habits, or unsure how to say what they want. Their partners do not make that easy for them, which is usually the point.
There are also links to Ray's other Auburn Hill stories, including the Sisters From Hell and Jobs from Hell books. New readers can begin here without homework, but returning readers will spot familiar people around town.
Start with Grumpy As Hell to meet Ace, Addy, the brothers, and the town that keeps proving Hell can be a pretty good place to fall in love.
