Fight for the Future

by Brandon Q Morris

2021

Two desperate species reach the same rich star system looking for helium-3. They need the same fuel, cannot understand each other, and edge toward a war neither side can afford.

Series background & context

Helium-3 is a compact series, but it carries a lot of weight. The core setup is brutally simple. Two different species, each desperate for helium-3 and long-term survival, reach the same star system. They need the same resource, cannot easily understand each other, and have very little room for trust.

That gives the books a survival-war feel, but Morris and Cliff Allister do more than stage a simple conflict. The interesting part is how badly communication breaks down. The problem is not just that the two sides want different things. It is that their bodies, histories, and assumptions are so different that compromise looks impossible from the start. That makes every move feel more dangerous.

In Fight for the Future and Death from the Past, the scale keeps widening. Hidden human history, vanished survivors, and old technology turn the series into more than a resource war. The characters are trying to solve a mystery while standing on top of a powder keg. The result is leaner and more direct than some of Morris's longer sagas, but still full of big ideas.

If you want hard science fiction that puts first contact under maximum pressure, this is a strong choice. It is about scarcity, fear, and the thin line between misunderstanding and annihilation.
