Series background & context
The Heirloom series brings together three stand alone novels linked by the idea that an everyday object can hold a family’s entire history. Each book follows women from different generations whose lives are pulled back together by a single keepsake, whether it is a charm bracelet, a hope chest or a recipe box, and each story blends memory, heartbreak and second chances in small town settings.
In The Charm Bracelet, readers meet Lolly, her daughter Arden and granddaughter Lauren. Lolly’s memory is slipping, but the charms she has collected since childhood give her a way to share the stories she has never fully told. Over one bittersweet visit, those tiny silver tokens reopen family conversations about dreams, sacrifices and the kind of life each woman still wants.
The second book, The Hope Chest, moves to a lakeside Michigan home where Mattie is living with ALS and knows her time is short. Her hope chest, packed with objects from her past, becomes a bridge between Mattie, her devoted husband Don and their new caregiver Rose and Rose’s young daughter. Every item they unpack together sparks another memory and another chance to choose love over fear.
In The Recipe Box, Samantha “Sam” Mullins flees an exhausting job as a New York sous chef and returns to her family’s northern Michigan orchard and pie shop. Working alongside her mother and grandmother, Sam bakes her way through the stained cards in a wooden box that has been passed down through the women in her family, rediscovering not only their stories but also her own sense of home.
Although each Heirloom novel stands alone, together they trace a loose arc from youth to late life, from first questions about who you are to the legacy you leave behind. The settings shift from lake cottages and small towns to family farms and orchards, but the emotional through line stays the same: heirlooms are less about monetary value and more about the memories, recipes and rituals we refuse to let disappear.
You can pick up any book in the series and understand it on its own, yet starting with The Charm Bracelet, then The Hope Chest and The Recipe Box mirrors the order in which Shipman wrote them and lets you feel how her fascination with keepsakes deepens from novel to novel. However you approach them, expect gentle humor, layered backstories and a quiet invitation to think about the objects that tell your own family’s tale.
