Author bio

Heather Alexander was born in New York City and grew up in New Jersey. She later studied at Cornell in upstate New York, then spent years moving between New York, New Jersey, and, eventually, Los Angeles.

Books were part of her life early. At Cornell, she worked as a research assistant to novelist and children's literature scholar Alison Lurie, and that helped turn a general love of reading into a lasting interest in books for young people.

She came to writing through editing first. Alexander began her career in children's publishing at Grosset & Dunlap and later worked at Parachute Publishing, where she handled commercial fiction and licensed projects. That background gave her a strong feel for pacing, structure, and the kind of details that keep younger readers interested.

It also made her unusually versatile.

Alexander writes both fiction and nonfiction, and that range is one of the most appealing things about her career. In one part of her list, you get lively, illustrated introductions like A Child's Introduction to Greek Mythology, A Child's Introduction to Art, and A Child's Introduction to Egyptology. In another, you get early chapter fiction such as Wallace and Grace Take the Case and Step into the Spotlight!, books built for newer readers who want mystery, humor, and momentum.

Her fiction often puts children in a fresh setting, but the feelings stay familiar. Marlo has to find her place on a circus train. Wallace and Grace solve mysteries by slowing down and noticing clues. Even her tie-in work for worlds like Ever After High, Wizards of Waverly Place, and Hannah Montana stays rooted in friendship, embarrassment, rivalry, and figuring out who you are when other people expect something from you.

Curiosity is the thread that ties it together.

Even when the subject changes, Alexander's books tend to share a few traits: clear explanations, brisk chapters, and a sense that learning should feel like discovery rather than homework. She likes big subjects, mythology, art, history, geography, folklore, and odd facts, but she has a knack for breaking them into pieces that feel manageable. Later books like Only in America, The Good Luck Book, and Haunted USA show that same instinct from another angle, gathering unusual stories and surprising details into formats that invite browsing.

Today she lives in Los Angeles and continues to work not only as an author but also as a children's book editor, packager, and literary scout. She has stayed close to the wider children's book world through school visits, speaking, and community work, and she also cofounded the Morristown Festival of Books in New Jersey.

She writes for readers who want answers, but also for readers who want a spark. That combination has given her a career that stretches from mythology and mysteries to art, biographies, state guides, and fairy-tale diaries.
