If you want a queer coming-of-age series that is hopeful without being naive, this is what Heartstopper does well. The books are warm, funny, and easy to move through, yet they take pain seriously when it shows up. That balance helped turn the comic into a graphic novel hit and later a screen adaptation, but the appeal on the page is straightforward. You get Nick and Charlie's relationship in order, a strong supporting cast, and a version of teen life that feels kind without pretending everything is simple.
