Hearts of Gold Books in Order

Hearts of Gold is less a single ongoing series than a small box of connected historical romance treats. The collection gathers three novellas set in Charleston, Baton Rouge, and New Mexico, and together they make a strong sampler of the kinds of stories Grace Hitchcock likes to tell. The settings change, the heroines change, and the problems change, but the emotional pull stays consistent.

One novella follows a Charleston bridal shop owner who has learned the hard way not to depend on men. Another is Miss Beaumont's Companion, with its hidden-identity premise, as Aria St. Angelo is pushed into standing in for her employer's absent daughter at a governor's masquerade ball. The third heads west with a Harvey Girl who has built a life around work and independence, only to have the past walk back in.

Short does not mean slight here.

What links these stories is Hitchcock's fondness for women who are earning their own place in the world after disappointment, social pressure, or family trouble. The heroes matter, but so does the job, the setting, and the social trap the heroine is trying to escape. You also see several of her favorite ingredients in miniature, class tension, faith, steadiness, and just enough danger to keep the stories from floating away on charm alone.

The collection also shows how comfortably Hitchcock moves between different corners of the nineteenth century. One story stays close to southern society, another leans into costume and performance, and another brushes against the same westward, Harvey Girl atmosphere readers find in Aprons & Veils. The tone is warm rather than sprawling, but she still makes room for work, money, reputation, and the question of whether love can be trusted.

There is no big cliff-hanger linking the pieces, and that is part of the appeal. Hearts of Gold works best as a sampler, something you can read in a few sittings to get a feel for her voice. If you already like Grace Hitchcock, it is a satisfying collection. If you are new to her, it gives you several of her favorite story ingredients in a compact form, without asking you to commit to a full trilogy first.
