The Heart Trilogy, Heart of Honor, Heart of Fire, and Heart of Courage, is one of the more unusual corners of Kat Martin's historical work. It begins with Victorian-style romance, but it also adds a light fantastical thread, which gives the series a slightly larger, stranger feel than her straight historicals.
Heart of Honor makes that clear right away. A reform-minded heroine, Krista Hart, crosses paths with Leif Draugr, a powerful Viking descendant who seems to come out of another world entirely. That mix of social setting, danger, and larger-than-life hero continues to shape the series even as each book shifts to its own central couple.
The tone is adventurous.
Martin is still interested in passion, protection, and emotional standoffs, but these books leave more room for the extraordinary. That makes them a nice fit for readers who enjoy historical romance but do not mind a story stepping a little beyond the ordinary rules of the genre.
