Heart of the World Books in Order

The Heart of the World is a four-book fantasy series set in a region being crushed by a long war. The Holy Empire of Mann has spent years expanding its reach, while the island confederation known as the Free Ports struggles to remain independent. At the center is Bar-Khos, a fortress city that has held out through a brutal siege and cannot afford many more losses.

The series begins in Farlander with Ash, an aging member of the Roshun, an order of assassins that protects its clients through the threat of vengeance. Ash reluctantly takes on Nico, a desperate young man from the streets of Bar-Khos, as an apprentice. When a killing demands a Roshun response, the pair are pulled into the much larger conflict between Mann and the Free Ports.

As the books continue through Stands a Shadow, The Black Dream, and Fierce Gods, Buchanan follows a wider cast across battle lines, political schemes, dangerous journeys, and the increasingly desperate defense of Bar-Khos. Ash and Nico remain important, but soldiers, diplomats, rebels, assassins, and civilians all get a stake in the outcome. The war is not simply background noise. It shapes what people can eat, where they can travel, and whom they can trust.

The setting has the feel of a fantasy world on the edge of an industrial change. Blades and martial training sit alongside gunpowder, ships that travel by sea and sky, and unfamiliar forms of technology. There are strange and dreamlike elements too, but the series is more interested in tension, travel, and the consequences of violence than in spellcasting rules.

It is a grim but fast-moving adventure, with multiple viewpoints and plenty of shifting loyalties. Buchanan gives room to people on every side of the conflict, even when their choices are ugly or dangerous. That makes the central question less about who is purely good, and more about what survival, freedom, and revenge can ask of a person.
