Heart of the Rockies Books in Order

Heart of the Rockies shifts Kathleen Morgan's historical fiction into northwestern Colorado in the late 1870s, and the result is a tougher, more openly conflict-driven series. The scenery is still beautiful, mountains, ranch land, long distances, hard weather, but this is not a gentle backdrop. The land is contested, families are divided, and government pressure hangs over everything.

The first book, A Heart Divided, starts close to home with a long-running feud between the Caldwells and the Wainwrights. Sarah Caldwell and Cord Wainwright are pulled into that fight whether they want it or not, and their growing attachment immediately becomes dangerous because every family grievance is already sitting in the room with them. Morgan uses the familiar romance setup of enemy families, but she grounds it in a real frontier community where violence and retaliation feel possible at any moment.

The second book, A Love Forbidden, broadens the scope. Shiloh Wainright takes a teaching post at the White River Indian Agency, hoping to help Ute children and build an independent life. Instead she lands in the middle of worsening tensions between the Utes, a rigid Indian agent, and the demands of the United States government. Her renewed connection with Jesse Blackwater, a half-Ute childhood friend, turns the story into something even more layered, because the love story is inseparable from questions of identity, prejudice, and power.

This series has bigger social stakes than some of Morgan's earlier work.

That does not mean it stops being romantic. It just means the romance has more to push against. Family loyalty, racial tension, bad policy, and fear of change all shape the choices these characters make. Morgan is very good at showing how private feeling can be boxed in by public pressure, and that skill serves these books well. The emotional arcs are still intimate, but the world around the couples is less forgiving.

The Colorado setting matters in a different way than it does in Culdee Creek. Here the frontier feels unstable. Communities are still defining themselves. Alliances are temporary. People talk about justice, duty, and mercy while standing in systems that do not treat everyone equally. That tension gives the series much of its force.

If you want Morgan at her most historically grounded and socially tense, Heart of the Rockies is a strong place to start. The books keep her trademark warmth and faith, but they also ask harder questions about what love can do, and what it cannot fix on its own.
