Series background & context

Michelle Heard’s Heart of Crime is a mafia romance series that begins with Savage Truce. Its opening story places a woman born into a powerful Bratva family in the middle of a conflict she cannot control. A brief encounter with a kind stranger once offered her an escape from that life. Years later, meeting him again means facing a man whose authority now makes him frightening. The series introduces romance through a world where family names, criminal power and political arrangements can determine a person’s future.

The heroine of Savage Truce has never felt protected by the status into which she was born. Mocked and overlooked, she finds a place for herself at the theatre, working with fabric and a needle. There she meets a stranger who needs a button repaired. A conversation over coffee and pastries gives her a memory of warmth that survives long after the encounter ends. They share only their first names, leaving her unaware of how that meeting will connect to the life she later faces.

The person she remembers and the man before her no longer seem the same.

When her grandfather is dead and the Bratva is at war, she is imprisoned because of her family. The new pakhan arrives to inspect the prisoners, and she recognises Rodian Volkov as the stranger she never forgot. His position changes everything about their reunion. He now has power over the people around him and over her circumstances. When he announces that he will marry her to secure peace, she does not feel able to refuse. A personal memory becomes entangled with a public bargain.

That imbalance gives the opening romance its central tension. Rodian’s earlier kindness has to be weighed against his present ruthlessness, while the heroine’s family connection makes her valuable for reasons that have little to do with what she wants. The setting matters because marriage can serve as an alliance in a violent struggle, rather than simply a private decision between two people. The tone is dark and emotionally charged, with fear, attraction and the possibility of trust occupying the same relationship. The return of someone once associated with safety makes the danger more personal.

Savage Truce is the first book and is presented as a standalone romance within the series. Venomous Promises follows it on this page. Beginning with the opening novel gives readers the clearest introduction to the Heart of Crime setting and its mix of courtship, criminal loyalty and family obligation. Readers drawn to second-chance encounters and marriages arranged for political reasons will find those ideas central to the starting premise, where a treasured memory offers no simple assurance about what comes next.
