Haunted from Within

by Ian CP Irvine

2013

After reporter Peter Nicolson survives a brutal attack through a double kidney transplant and experimental treatment, he begins seeing visions of unsolved murders. His hunt for the killer opens into a dark medical conspiracy with unsettling questions about identity.

Series background & context

Haunted from Within begins with a medical emergency and then refuses to stay in one genre.

The central character is Peter Nicolson, an investigative reporter in Edinburgh whose life is nearly ended by violence. The only way to save him is a double kidney transplant, paired with an experimental treatment. He survives, but recovery comes with a disturbing side effect, Peter starts seeing visions tied to unsolved killings committed by a murderer nobody has caught.

That setup gives the series its real shape. On one level, these books work like a dark mystery, because Peter has to follow the clues in the visions, work out what they mean, and figure out whether he is witnessing memories, fragments, or something stranger. On another level, the story is a medical thriller about transplantation, identity, and the hidden consequences of a treatment that seems too good to be true.

Edinburgh is an important anchor. Peter is not a superhero or a formal detective, he is a reporter, which means he investigates by asking questions, chasing people, and trying to connect facts faster than the people in power can hide them. As his trail widens across Britain and Europe, the series also turns into a conspiracy story. The makers of the drug treatment, identified as SP-X4, have every reason to fear what Peter might uncover.

The eerie side is what makes the books stand out. Irvine uses the idea of transplanted memory and altered personality to create a ghost-story feeling without fully leaving the medical world behind. You get serial-killer suspense, shadowy science, and a constant question about what exactly is happening inside Peter's mind and body.

If you want a thriller that mixes hospitals, crime investigation, experimental science, and a paranormal shiver, this series does that very neatly. It feels tense, odd, and just plausible enough to keep needling at you.
