Hart's Landing

by Melanie Harlow

2026

Ten years after a fire and a shattered friendship drove Mila Ferguson away, she is back in Hart's Landing and trying not to look at Everett McKean. The town's beloved mayor has other ideas, and so does the past.

Series background & context

So far, Hart's Landing looks like the start of a slightly different kind of Melanie Harlow small-town series. The first book still has the warmth, chemistry, and close community that readers expect from her, but it also carries a stronger sense of old wounds, broken friendships, and long-buried questions. The result is a town that feels welcoming on the surface and unsettled underneath.

The opening setup is strong. Ten years before the story begins, Mila Ferguson left Hart's Landing after a devastating fire, a stolen kiss, and the collapse of an important friendship circle. When life brings her home again, she wants to keep her head down and get back out. That plan becomes difficult fast, because Everett McKean, her former crush, is now the town's mayor and impossible to avoid.

That return-home structure gives the book two kinds of tension at once. There is the romance, of course, built around unfinished feelings and a second chance that neither character fully expected. But there is also the wider question of what really happened in the past, and how a whole town can carry one night's damage for years. That extra layer makes the story feel a touch more reflective than some of Harlow's breezier series.

The setting helps a lot. Hart's Landing has the same appeal as her other Michigan-flavored towns, but the atmosphere here is shaped by memory. People remember who Mila was, what she left behind, and what was never resolved. That means coming home is not just cozy. It is exposing. For readers, that creates a nice balance between familiar small-town charm and a more emotionally charged sense of unfinished business.

Based on the first book, this feels like a series with room to grow through town connections, old friendships, and shared history. Even if the future books branch out to other couples, the foundation has already been laid: this is a world where love, forgiveness, friendship, and truth are all tangled together. If you like small-town romance with a little more ache under the sweetness, Hart's Landing has a strong opening pitch.
