Series background & context
The Harry Fletcher books follow Harry 'Fletch' Fletcher, a street wise East End operator who keeps trying to do right by his family while working far too close to dangerous men. Across two linked novels you see how one risk, taken for love and revenge, ripples through decades of his life.
In The Price, Fletch is working for feared gangster Billy King, collecting cash and keeping the wheels turning in Billy's part of the city. He knows exactly how ruthless his boss is and how small a mistake it would take to end up on the wrong side of him. Even so, Fletch lets himself fall for Susan, Billy's glamorous and lonely wife, starting an affair that could get them both killed if it ever comes to light.
The book is as much about temptation and loyalty as it is about violence. Fletch understands that every rule he breaks will come back to haunt him, but he is also tired of always playing the role expected of him. The tension comes from watching him try to juggle his feelings, his survival instinct, and the unwritten laws of the firm.
The Score picks up the story years later. Fletch has done time for avenging the gangland killing of his younger brother, Spencer, and has spent two decades away from his children, Austin and Kit. When he comes home he finds that the world has moved on without him and that his son and daughter have grown up inside the very life he had once hoped to shield them from.
Kit is now married to volatile gangster Rosco Taylor, and Austin is spoiling for a fight, pushing toward a turf war that could draw in every crew in the area. Fletch is older, warier, and full of regret, but he still has the same hard edge that kept him alive the first time around. Much of the drama comes from his attempts to pull his kids back from the brink without repeating the mistakes that put him in prison.
Across the two books Kerry Kaya keeps the focus tight on family, trust, and the fine line between protecting the people you love and trapping them. The Harry Fletcher series gives you all the expected gangland staples, from smoky pubs and back room deals to brutal reprisals, but it anchors them in a story about a father trying to fix what he broke.
