Author bio
Harper St. George grew up in rural Alabama and along Florida's Forgotten Coast, a landscape that left her with a lasting love of history, adventure, and the stories people carry with them. That early pull toward the past still shapes her fiction, whether she is writing about Viking warriors, American heiresses, or women trying to make room for themselves in rigid social worlds.
History got there first.
She has said that the writing bug really took hold in junior high. An English teacher, Mrs. Graham, once told her, in effect, that she had made readers care about her characters, and that kind of encouragement can stay with a person for years. By high school, she had also found historical romance, which brought together the history, danger, and love stories she already enjoyed.
Writing did not become her immediate career, though. She went to business school and for a long time treated authorship as something she wanted, not necessarily something she could build a life around. After the birth of her oldest daughter, she finally began writing seriously, and that private ambition turned into a real body of work.
She did not take the straight road to writing.
That matters, because many of her books are full of women who are being pushed toward one life while wanting another. In The Heiress Gets a Duke, one of her best known novels, an American steel heiress runs headfirst into the cold logic of titles, money, and marriage. The Devil and the Heiress and The Lady Tempts an Heir keep building that Gilded Age world, mixing romance with family pressure, social expectations, and women who want more say over their own futures.
She returns to those questions in The Stranger I Wed, which opens the Doves of New York series. That book, like much of her work, begins with a practical arrangement and then asks what happens when real feeling shows up anyway. Readers who like marriages of convenience, social tension, and heroines with a strong sense of self tend to find a lot to like in that side of her catalog.
She also writes stories with a rougher edge. Falling for Her Viking Captive leans into revenge, divided loyalties, and a dangerous alliance between a Viking hero and the woman trying to stop him. Her earlier Viking romances do similar work on a broader canvas, using raids, truces, and cross-cultural conflict to drive very personal love stories.
And if you only know her from historical romance, there is a surprise waiting.
With Tara Wyatt, she also wrote the Blood and Glory books, including Dirty Boxing, a contemporary MMA romance. Even in a modern setting, the through line is easy to spot: strong heroines, emotionally complicated heroes, public stakes, and attraction that makes an already messy situation even messier.
Today she lives in the Atlanta area and writes historical romance that ranges from the Viking Era to the Gilded Age. Her novels have been translated into ten languages, and her work has been featured widely and selected by Book of the Month Club. The clearest way to sum her up, though, is probably this: if you like romance with strong period detail, clear emotional stakes, and women who do not quietly accept the role assigned to them, Harper St. George is very much worth reading.
