Author bio

Harley Tate writes disaster fiction with a blunt, practical streak. The books start with a question that feels simple until the answer turns ugly: what do ordinary people do when power fails, roads crack, cities burn, and help does not come?

Publicly, Tate keeps the focus on the fiction more than on personal biography. What is easy to trace is the writing path. The first major foothold came in 2017 with Darkness Begins, the opening novel in the After the EMP saga, where a geomagnetic storm knocks out the grid and strands the Sloane family across California.

That was a strong beginning.

From there, Tate built outward fast. The After the EMP books grew into a larger connected story, moving from Madison, Tracy, and Walter to later characters like Colt and Dani, while keeping the same survival-first tension. Readers who like the series usually respond to the same thing: the disaster is big, but the choices stay personal. Getting home, finding medicine, protecting a child, deciding whether to trust a stranger, those are the engines that keep the books moving.

That same approach shows up again in the Nuclear Survival books. In Brace for Impact, Take the Hit, and Bear the Brunt, Tate uses a linked attack on the United States to follow several different strands of survivors, including a nurse, a hacker, a reporter, and the people around them. The settings change, but the storytelling stays grounded in immediate problems, what to carry, where to hide, who needs help, and what happens when fear gets louder than reason.

Tate did not stay with one kind of catastrophe for long. Fire and Ashes shifts to an asteroid strike and its aftermath. Upheaval turns to a Pacific Northwest megaquake and tsunami. Breaking Point moves into earthquake country in the American heartland. Ready Set Chaos drops a solar storm into Atlanta and builds a survival story around two sisters, one of them trapped in prison when the grid goes down. The disasters vary, but the interest stays the same: systems fail fast, and regular people have to improvise.

That is the hook.

The books also have a recognizable cast of character types. Tate likes teachers, pilots, nurses, students, reporters, law students, former service members, parents, and people who were not expecting to become anyone's hero that day. Some are prepared. Many are not. A lot of the tension comes from that gap between everyday life and what survival suddenly demands.

There is also a steady interest in the nuts and bolts of collapse. Food matters. Fuel matters. Antibiotics matter. So do weather, radiation, bridges, vehicles, and the problem of getting information when phones, news, and government systems all stop being reliable. Even when the books move quickly, they tend to stay tied to those practical details.

There is not much public personal detail attached to the name Harley Tate, and in a way that fits the work. The attention stays on the story, the pressure cooker around the characters, and the question running through nearly every series: when the world breaks, what part of you holds.
