Harley Hitch and the Iron Forest

by Vashti Hardy

2021

Harley, her robot dog Sprocket, and her friend Cosmo live in Inventia, where forests grow mechanical parts. When a strange fungus threatens the Iron Forest, Harley throws herself into solving the mystery, with messy results.

Series background & context

The Harley Hitch books are built for readers who like their science with a bit of chaos and a lot of fun. Harley is a determined young inventor living in Inventia, a place where science rules, robots are part of everyday life, and even the natural world behaves differently. Her closest companions are her robot dog, Sprocket, and her friend Cosmo, and together they keep stumbling into mysteries that start small and quickly grow much bigger.

Inventia is the real hook. In this world, technology does not just sit on a workbench. It grows in the forest. The Iron Forest produces the cogs, hinges, and other parts that keep inventions running, so when that system goes wrong the whole place feels it. That idea tells you a lot about the series straight away. These are stories where engineering, ecology, and everyday life are tightly linked. Fixing a problem is never only about one gadget. It is about the town around it, too.

Harley has the kind of curiosity that gets things moving.

That is part of the joke and part of the point. She is bright, eager, and usually trying to help, but her plans do not always unfold neatly. The books enjoy the messiness of experimentation. Strange fungi, disappearing cabinets, missing moons, mysterious fossils, time-bending inventions, runaway robots, and wild scientific side effects all fit naturally into the series because Harley's world is one where discovery is exciting and slightly dangerous by default.

Later books widen the stakes without losing the everyday charm. One adventure turns a bit of circus-related trouble into a crisis when the moon disappears and natural rhythms start breaking down. Another begins with a school trip and a fossil find, then spins into a bigger mystery about time and unintended consequences. The pattern is clear in the best way: Harley notices something odd, makes a leap, and then has to use real thought and teamwork to put things right.

The tone is younger and lighter than some of Hardy's middle grade fantasies, but the stories are not slight. They keep coming back to responsibility, the environment, and the consequences of invention. Harley does not win because she is perfect. She wins by staying curious, caring about what is happening around her, and being willing to rethink what she thought she knew. The brisk pace and plentiful illustrations make the series especially inviting for younger readers who still want proper adventure.

If you want funny, inventive books with robots, experiments, environmental stakes, and a heroine who cannot stop investigating, Harley Hitch does exactly what it promises. It is a cheerful, problem-solving series with enough weird science to feel fresh and enough heart to keep the chaos grounded.
