Series background & context

Harem Station is JA Huss's science-fiction romance series, written as KC Cross, about outlaw aliens and the unexpected relationships that disrupt their home. The station is a refuge run by men who have made an arrangement with a powerful and unstable artificial intelligence. Their lives revolve around crime, pleasure and the belief that they can enjoy the rewards of surviving outside ordinary rules. The arrival of runaway royalty makes those assumptions much harder to maintain.

Booty Hunter introduces Serpint, an Akeelian bounty hunter returning from a difficult job. He brings a prize back for his brother's collection and wants uncomplicated recreation after what the work has cost him. Instead, Princess Lyra refuses to fit the obedient role he expects. Her secrets and strong resistance turn their attraction into something more demanding than a brief encounter. The opening book establishes a contrast between people being treated as acquisitions and people insisting on desires of their own.

The alien setting makes physical differences and unusual forms of attraction part of the romance. Cygnian princesses have characteristics that make them especially sought after, while the Akeelians bring their own unfamiliar biology. Those features give the series a deliberately explicit, comic tone, but the characters also carry histories that complicate the fantasy of a station devoted only to pleasure. Escaping one place doesn't mean leaving every obligation or threat behind.

The station is a home, but it isn't free of secrets.

Star Crossed looks back twenty years to Crux and Corla, whose connection helps explain how the outlaw brothers came to live there. Although it is a prequel, the author places it after Booty Hunter and before Big Dicker in the reading sequence. That positioning lets the opening adventure introduce the world before the earlier history adds another perspective. The shared setting therefore develops through both new romances and discoveries about the people who built it.

Big Dicker follows Jimmy, who wants to avoid finding his destined mate but encounters Delphi during an emergency stop at a themed resort. Her intention to kidnap him creates a different conflict around the idea of a soulmate. Other volumes, including Lady Luck, Prison Princess, Veiled Vixen and Uncrossed, extend the connected world. The individual couples provide different entry points into its emotional and physical entanglements, while the station keeps their stories linked.

Start with Booty Hunter, then Star Crossed, before continuing through the numbered books. Expect sexually explicit alien romance, outrageous humour and an underlying interest in belonging among people who have made themselves outsiders. The series offers a different couple in each main instalment while letting shared mysteries and history give the romances a larger setting than any one encounter.
