Harbour House Books in Order

Harbour House is a family-centered wartime saga set in Wivenhoe, Essex, where the Roby family relocate from London just before the war changes everything. That move gives the series its foundation. What begins as a search for safety becomes a much bigger reshaping of home, marriage, work, and class.

Elizabeth Roby arrives used to comfort, staff, and a more sheltered kind of life. Wivenhoe asks something else of her. Her husband Jonathan's work ties the family to local shipyards and river traffic, while the house itself gradually fills with new duties, new people, and the emotional weight of a country at war.

The books broaden from the Robys into an ensemble story. Children, servants, evacuees, lodgers, relations from London, and local workers all begin to matter. Later volumes bring romances that cut across class lines and show how quickly war rearranges what once felt fixed.

The setting does a lot of work here. Wivenhoe, the river, the threat to shipping, Dunkirk, blackouts, and eventually the Blitz all press in on the characters. Harbour House is less about one glamorous heroine than about a household, and then a whole community, learning how to absorb shock after shock.
