Hannibal is one of Brazee's stranger and more focused military SF ideas. The lead is not a human recruit or officer. He is a genetically enhanced leopard, built and trained to serve in combat where commanders would rather not risk what they think of as real soldiers.

That setup gives the book two tracks at once. On one level, it is still a war story. Hannibal is part of a four-animal team, controlled by a human warrant officer and sent into dangerous missions. There is pressure, violence, and the same practical sense of small-unit combat that runs through a lot of Brazee's work.

But the real tension is inside Hannibal.

His free will has been suppressed on purpose. He is meant to obey, not question. When instinct, memory, and something like selfhood start pushing back against that conditioning, the book becomes about more than a mission. It becomes about personhood, ownership, and whether a being designed as a weapon can claim a life of his own.

That makes Hannibal feel a bit harsher and more unsettling than some of Brazee's series work. The action is there, but the emotional hook is the conflict between programming and identity.
