Author bio
Hannah Alexander is the pen name used by Cheryl and Mel Hodde, a husband and wife writing team whose novels blend romance, suspense, faith, and a lot of medical detail. If you have read one of their books, you have probably felt that mix right away. Their stories often begin in small towns, clinics, emergency rooms, or places where ordinary people are suddenly under a lot of pressure.
Their partnership started in a way that sounds like one of their own openings. On a blind date, Cheryl learned that Mel was a doctor and immediately asked if he could help her figure out how to paralyze a character without doing permanent damage. She was a novelist doing research. He was an emergency room physician. Instead of being alarmed for long, he got interested, and the conversation took off from there.
A year and a half later, they were married.
That early exchange says a lot about how their books work. Cheryl brought the storytelling instinct. Mel brought the medical knowledge, the plotting help, and the eye for what would ring true in a crisis scene. Together they built stories where the medicine matters, not as decoration, but as part of the characters' daily lives and moral choices.
Both of them had wanted their callings from a young age. Mel decided at ten that he wanted to be a doctor. Cheryl says she was making up songs and stories before she even knew her ABCs, and by 1985 she had written her first romance novel. After they married in 1995, they reworked earlier manuscripts together, and publishers began to notice.
Their first novel as a team was Sacred Trust, published in 1999. It was followed by Solemn Oath and Silent Pledge, books that established one of their favorite modes, small-town medicine under strain, wounded people trying to trust again, and faith tested in real time.
Then came the books many readers know best. Hideaway won a Christy Award for romance and opened the door to a longer run of Ozarks-set suspense. Later series like Second Opinion and Hallowed Halls kept building on the same strengths. Readers tend to come to Hannah Alexander for the believable medical scenes, but they stay for the emotional messiness, the second chances, and the feeling that the town itself matters.
Their settings tell you a lot about their interests. The Missouri Ozarks show up again and again, along with small hospitals, country clinics, struggling families, and people who are trying to do the right thing when there is no easy answer. Even when they branch into historical fiction with books like The Wedding Kiss, or later connected romances like A Woman Worth Knowing and Ashes Over Yellowstone, the core is much the same. Put good people under pressure. See what holds.
That steadiness is part of their appeal.
Over the years, they have continued to revisit earlier books, reissue some of them, and add newer stories to the mix. Across the whole bibliography, the pattern is clear. Hannah Alexander writes about danger, mercy, work, loyalty, and the long road back from hurt. The books may have suspense, but they are just as interested in healing.
