A Dirty Job
by Christopher Moore
2007
Charlie Asher is a normal guy until he starts seeing people glow before they die. He discovers he has been recruited as a Death Merchant and must manage the business of soul collection while raising his baby.
Series background & context
Charlie Asher is pretty much the definition of a "beta male." He isn't the guy who saves the day with a jaw of steel and a quippy one-liner. He is a normal, somewhat neurotic guy who runs a second-hand shop in San Francisco and just wants to get through the day without too much drama. He loves his quiet routine, he is devoted to his family, and he takes great pride in being a decent, reliable person. He fully expects a life of retail management and domestic normalcy.
That expectation shatters fast.
Just as he is adjusting to the overwhelming reality of new fatherhood, Charlie finds out he has been recruited for a position he never applied for and definitely doesn't want. He is a Death Merchant. It turns out that the business of dying is messy, bureaucratic, and surprisingly low-tech. People die, and their souls need to be collected and protected in specific vessels—often random objects—before they can move on. If someone drops the ball, things get ugly.
Charlie is the guy who has to catch the ball. He is suddenly tasked with retrieving these soul vessels from the dying, all while keeping them safe from the forces of darkness that live in the sewers and shadows of the city. These dark entities are always looking for a loose soul to snatch to increase their power, and Charlie is the only line of defense. It is a high-stakes gig with zero benefits, no vacation time, and absolutely terrible hours.
The real challenge, though, isn't just the monsters hiding under the bed. It’s the baby in the crib. Charlie is a single father trying to raise his infant daughter, Sophie, while essentially running a branch office for the Grim Reaper. He has to balance the terrifying responsibilities of his new supernatural career with the equally terrifying realities of changing diapers, finding reliable babysitters, and getting a toddler to sleep. The story finds its unique rhythm in this clash between the macabre and the domestic.
He doesn’t have to do it entirely alone, which is lucky because he usually has no idea what he is doing. As he learns the ropes of the afterlife bureaucracy, he collects a strange group of allies. The books populate his world with a motley crew of helpers that includes Buddhist monks, cynical goth teenagers, and hellhounds. They help him navigate a San Francisco that looks normal on the surface but is teeming with death deities and trickster spirits underneath.
This is ultimately a story about a regular guy doing his best in a completely impossible situation. It mixes the dark elements of fantasy with the everyday exhaustion of parenthood. It serves up a heartwarming, chaotic, and darkly funny look at death, destiny, and the absolute importance of good customer service.
