Series background & context

The Grim Lovelies books are Megan Shepherd's dark YA fantasy duology, set in a magical version of Paris where beauty and danger share the same room. The heroine, Anouk, is not fully human when the series begins. She is a Beastie, an animal enchanted into a girl and bound to serve a witch. That setup gives the books their central tension right away: Anouk wants freedom, but her whole existence has been designed to keep her useful to someone else.

These stories love silk, glitter, and chandeliers, but they never forget the cage underneath.

In Grim Lovelies, Anouk's mistress is murdered and Anouk becomes the most convenient suspect. She and the other Beasties have only a few days to solve the crime before the magic holding their human forms wears off. That ticking clock keeps the first book moving, but the real draw is the world around it. Paris matters here because the series leans into high fashion, secret magical circles, elegant houses, and shadowy streets, all hiding a ruthless system of witches and bargains.

Anouk is easy to root for because she is both sheltered and sharp. She notices the way power works, even before she fully understands it. Her friendships with the other Beasties give the series warmth, while the romance and betrayals keep it unstable in a good way. The tone lands somewhere between fairy-tale glamour and criminal underworld intrigue.

Midnight Beauties takes everything personal in the first book and ties it to a larger fight over magic and control. With her friends trapped back in animal form, Anouk becomes desperate enough to consider dangerous deals, including political marriage and a deadly path toward becoming a witch herself. The story widens from Paris into a more openly political fantasy, with covens, rivals, and shifting alliances, but it never loses sight of Anouk's very human wish to protect the people she loves.

In this world, power is real, but it is never free.

Across both books, expect a mix of murder mystery, found family, romance, witch politics, and a lot of thought about what humanity actually means. The series is stylish, but not soft. People get used, traded, enchanted, and cornered. If you like fantasies where the world feels lush on the surface and hard underneath, Grim Lovelies offers a strong two-book arc with a heroine who has to build her own agency piece by piece.
