Graham Smith Books in Order

Graham Smith is a Scottish crime writer whose books tend to start with a body, a bad decision, or both. Before publishing novels, he served his time as a joiner and did the kind of practical work that leaves a mark, digging drains, slating roofs, and building bridges to keep money coming in. Since 2000, he has run a busy hotel and wedding venue near Gretna Green, and that steady day job has sat alongside a steadily growing writing career.

He came to writing as a reader first.

Smith has said he fell for crime fiction young, after being handed a Famous Five book at the age of eight. From there he moved through adventure stories and into adult crime novels, the kind that prize pace, danger, and a strong central character. Long before he had books of his own on the shelves, he was reading widely, thinking hard about what worked, and building up the habits that would later shape his fiction.

That reading life turned into a reviewing life. In 2009 he began reviewing and interviewing for CrimeSquad, which meant he was not just consuming crime novels but pulling them apart, looking at how they were built, and talking to the writers behind them. By the time he started writing seriously in his late thirties, he had already spent years around the genre from the inside.

His first novel, Snatched from Home, introduced DI Harry Evans and the Cumbrian Major Crimes Team. It also set out a pattern that runs through much of Smith's work, hard cases, damaged but capable investigators, and a strong sense that every crime leaves a mess behind for ordinary people. Harry Evans is the bruised, angry, old-school side of Smith's writing, a detective near the end of his career who knows the county and its people almost too well.

Harry was only the start.

Smith then switched gears with Jake Boulder, an ex-Glaswegian living in the United States. Books like Watching the Bodies and The Kindred Killers are tougher and more openly action-driven, but they still keep the mystery machinery turning underneath. Jake is not a polished secret operative or a fantasy action hero. He is a bar-room brawler with loyalty, nerve, and just enough brains to keep chasing trouble when a sensible man would stop.

Then came Beth Young, who brought a different energy again. In The Silent Dead and A Body in the Lakes, Smith leans into police work, pattern-finding, and the eerie contrast between the beauty of the Lake District and the ugliness of the crimes committed there. Beth is younger, newer to major investigations, and less weighed down by cynicism, but she is not soft. She notices things. She keeps going.

Across these series, Smith returns to a few things again and again, close-knit teams under pressure, investigators carrying personal damage, and settings that matter as much as the plot. Cumbria and the Lake District are more than backdrops in the police books, while the Jake Boulder novels use American scale and movement to open the door to bigger, rougher action. Even when the stories move fast, there is usually real attention to the victims and the fallout.

Away from the novels, he founded Crime and Publishment, an annual crime-writing masterclass held at The Mill Forge, the hotel he manages. Several attendees have gone on to land publishing deals, which tells you something useful about him. He is not only interested in writing his own books. He likes helping other writers get moving too. He remains based near Gretna Green, still balancing work, reading, and crime fiction.
