Author bio
Graeme Hampton was born in Paisley, Scotland, and grew up in Stirling. His route to crime writing took a few turns before he published a novel. After leaving school, he trained as a stage manager and spent several years working in London.
Theatre work meant long days, tight schedules, and stories unfolding in front of an audience. It also gave him time in the city that would later shape the setting of his fiction.
In his late twenties, Hampton returned to Scotland and studied for a BA in English Literature at the University of Stirling. He then spent years in jobs he has described as dull, with some bleak stretches along the way, before making the move to writing full time.
London stayed with him.
His debut novel, Know No Evil, arrived in 2019 and introduced DI Matthew Denning and DS Molly Fisher. Set during a heatwave, it starts with the murder of a young mother and soon opens into a troubling question about a notorious old case. Hampton followed it with Blood Family, in which the detectives investigate a house fire that proves to be the cover for a multiple murder.
The series continued with The Darkness Within, Run For Cover, Shame the Devil, and Truth Lies Dying. These are police procedurals built around difficult cases, but the continuing partnership between Denning and Fisher gives the books their through-line. The cases take them across London, from parks and churchyards to abandoned Underground stations, and often begin with a crime that has deeper roots than it first appears.
Hampton's novels return to hidden histories, family secrets, institutional pressure, and the cost of pursuing justice when people with power would rather a case stayed closed. The stories put their detectives under pressure, while leaving room for the personal lives and working relationships that develop across the series.
He has said that he plans his novels in advance, though characters can still alter the route of a story once the writing is under way. It fits the shape of the Denning and Fisher books, which pair a clear investigative drive with clues that gradually change the reader's sense of what happened.
Hampton lives in Hastings, East Sussex. Alongside the Denning and Fisher novels, he has been working on standalone psychological thrillers, showing an interest in stories where danger can grow out of secrets, memory, and mistrust.
