Life Support shifts to Houston and narrows the focus again. Nurse Lauren Barclay returns to keep watch over her troubled sister, which means facing physician assistant Elijah Landry and a pile of old hurt. Eli is also carrying his own family strain, including responsibility for his disabled brother. When a hurricane barrels toward the city, the book folds domestic tension, medical stakes, and disaster response into one high-stress setting.

What links these novels is not one long mystery. It is the repeated question of how wounded people do their jobs well while still dealing with what hurts at home. Calvert likes characters with real duties, real patients, and no spare time for drama, which is exactly why the drama hits hard when it arrives. The tone is hopeful but not sugary.
