Gone

Series background & context

The Gone series starts in a sleepy coastal town in Southern California where, without warning, everyone aged fifteen and over simply disappears. In the same instant an invisible barrier slams down around the area, trapping the remaining kids inside what they soon call the FAYZ, the Fallout Alley Youth Zone.

No phones, no internet, no adults, and no way out.

At the center of the story is Sam Temple, a reluctant leader who can shoot searing light from his hands. Alongside brainy Astrid, loyal Quinn, steady Edilio, healer Lana and many others, Sam has to deal with ordinary disasters like fires and hunger as well as extraordinary problems, from mutant coyotes to teenagers whose powers could level a town. Arrayed against him are students from nearby Coates Academy, led by his charismatic and ruthless twin brother Caine and the sadistic Drake.

Across Gone, Hunger, Lies, Plague, Fear, and Light, the series follows the rise and fall of this improvised society. Early books lean into survival, organizing work crews, feeding toddlers and babies, keeping order when nobody is old enough to drive. As time passes, factions form, religion and politics fracture the town, and a sinister presence known as the gaiaphage slowly turns the FAYZ into something closer to a horror story than a superhero tale.

The second sequence, beginning with Monster and continuing in Villain and Hero, jumps ahead four years. The dome has fallen, but fragments of the alien virus that created the FAYZ keep landing on Earth, infecting new teenagers who become 'rockborn' with the ability to morph into monstrous forms. Shade, Cruz, Dekka and a new crew of powered kids find themselves pulled into global crises, while familiar faces from Perdido Beach return to face threats far bigger than one small town.

Throughout both arcs, the books stay focused on character as much as spectacle. Grant pushes his cast through starvation, grief, cruelty, and flashes of genuine kindness. The powers are flashy, but the real tension comes from questions about leadership, sacrifice, and what kids owe each other when the rules vanish. Violence and body horror are common, so these stories skew toward older teens and adults comfortable with darker material.

For the smoothest experience, most readers start with Gone and read straight through to Light before tackling the Monster trilogy, which builds directly on what happened inside the FAYZ. Taken together, the nine books trace a single long story about what happens when ordinary kids are handed impossible power and told to save themselves.
