The Golden Hustla

by Wahida Clark

2010

On the run after a check-cashing scam goes bad, Nina Coles steals from her ex and slips into a new identity in Georgia, landing a high-pressure job at WMM, a crooked telemarketing firm. With a ruthless boss, a vengeful former partner, the mob, and an undercover cop all closing in, Nina must pull off one last risky play to save herself and her children.

Series background & context

The Golden Hustla books sit at the crossroads of street hustle, corporate crime, and romantic suspense. Instead of corner deals and open-air drug markets, these stories mostly take place inside cubicles, call centers, and back offices, showing how a slick telemarketing scam can be just as dangerous as any action on the block.

The series follows Nina Coles, a woman from Trenton who has always known how to survive. When a check-cashing scam explodes in bloodshed, leaving her best friend dead and her brother badly wounded, Nina grabs two kilos from her ex-boyfriend and runs south. She lands in Georgia under a new name, determined to build a clean life and send for her children once she gets on her feet.

In The Golden Hustla, that fresh start comes in the form of WMM, a supposed advertising agency that really sells overpriced magazine and gold-coin packages over the phone. Nina becomes the star closer on the sales floor, learning that phones and scripts can be weapons, and that desperation makes people easy marks. Her greedy boss Rinaldo is juggling the mob and the feds, her ex-partner Akil is circling for a cut of the money, and an undercover cop named Rick Brown is getting too close for comfort.

The sequel, The Golden Hustla 2, picks up after a massive score disappears. Fifty million dollars is unaccounted for, and everyone from Armenian mobsters and bloodthirsty gang members to crooked federal agents wants a piece. Nina thinks she has finally found both love and security with Rick, only to discover that his past, and a woman he thought was dead, may shatter everything they have built.

Part of the fun of this series is how it connects back to the larger Thug universe. Rick Brown has history with Kyra from the Thug books, and characters move between Nina's world of phone rooms and the familiar streets of Clark's earlier novels. The tone mixes hustle detail, relationship drama, and thriller pacing, making the Golden Hustla stories a good bridge between classic street lit and more corporate, white-collar crime tales.

Readers who enjoy a smart, capable heroine walking a very fine line between legal and illegal will find a lot to dig into here. Nina is always calculating, always trying to stay one move ahead of bosses, law enforcement, and lovers, yet she is also a mother who wants simple things, like a safe house and her kids by her side. The series keeps asking whether she can ever truly have both.
