Series background & context
The heart of Going to the Dogs is friendship. The series starts with four women in New York City whose lives overlap through the dog park, their careers, and the fact that their pets keep causing the kind of trouble no human plan can control. Callie Lassiter, Brooke Palmer, Poe Madigan, and Harper Sinclair come from very different corners of the city, but their bond feels lived-in from the start.
The dogs are not cute window dressing here. They are plot starters, matchmakers, chaos agents, and sometimes the emotional center of the room. A Great Dane puppy scandal kicks off Leashed. A dog-grooming disaster helps set Groomed in motion. In Hounded, a dog-dancing contest turns dangerous. Even when the books lean into mystery or romantic tension, the pets keep the tone warm, funny, and a little gloriously unruly.
That mix is what gives the series its personality. These are contemporary romances with plenty of heat, but they also have the easy banter and found-family feel of a comfort read. Dawson uses Manhattan well, not as glossy backdrop, but as a place where dog trainers, veterinarians, artists, detectives, stockbrokers, nurses, and billionaires can all cross paths in entertaining ways.
As the series grows, the world gets bigger. The early friend group stays important, but later books widen the circle through AlphaGroup and the people connected to it. That lets the series shift from the original dog-park quartet to new couples without losing the sense that everyone still belongs to the same messy, loyal community. The wedding novellas work the same way. They are short, affectionate check-ins that let readers spend more time with couples they already know.
If you are wondering what to expect book to book, think romantic comedy with a little mystery, a little emotional bruising, and a lot of heart. The stakes are usually personal rather than world-ending. Can these people trust each other? Can they let go of old hurt? Can they build something steady in lives that already feel crowded? The answer usually comes with sharp dialogue, strong chemistry, and at least one dog stealing the scene.
