Author bio
Glenna McReynolds was born on March 25, 1953, in Lewiston, Idaho. Her family moved often while she was growing up, taking her through the Pacific Northwest, the Deep South, and plenty of places in between. The Rocky Mountain West was the region that stuck with her.
She later attended Colorado Mountain College, where she studied graphic arts and photography. It was there that she met her husband, Stan. Their creative interests eventually shifted toward books, with McReynolds turning to fiction and Stan becoming an English teacher.
Colorado became home.
McReynolds began publishing romance novels in the late 1980s, writing a run of Loveswept books built around lively heroines, capable heroes, and real momentum. Her early stories move from snowy Colorado to tropical islands, the Bahamas, Central America, and the South China Sea. They are romances, but they also make room for jewel thieves, bounty hunters, photojournalists, rodeo riders, archaeologists, and people who have gotten in far over their heads.
That mix is clear in Thieves in the Night, where an intelligence officer and a cat burglar collide during a blizzard-bound heist. In Dateline, a photojournalist and a determined young woman face danger in a war-torn Central American country. Avenging Angel sends a lawyer and an undercover investigator on the run from hitmen. It won the RITA Award for Short Contemporary Romance, a reminder that McReynolds was doing fast, suspenseful romance well before she adopted the Tara Janzen name.
She likes to keep people moving.
McReynolds also has a strong interest in research, especially anthropology and natural science, and that shows up in the places she builds. Outlaw Carson draws on archaeology and stolen Tibetan artifacts. River of Eden takes two ethnobotanists deep into the Brazilian Amazon in search of a rare orchid, with jungle hazards and human threats close behind. The setting is never just wallpaper in these books. It is part of the problem the characters have to solve.
In the late 1990s, she made a sharp turn into fantasy with the trilogy that begins with The Chalice and the Blade. Set first in twelfth-century Wales, the books combine old religious traditions, castles, dragons, dangerous caves, prophecy, time gates, and intense romances. Dream Stone follows Mychael ab Arawn into the struggle around Carn Merioneth, while Prince of Time expands the story into a distant future shaped by the same ancient conflict.
Then came another name on the cover: Tara Janzen.
Under that pen name, McReynolds continued writing romantic suspense and became known for the Steele Street novels, beginning with Crazy Hot. The name change fits the range of her work. As Glenna McReynolds, she wrote category romance, adventure romance, and romantic fantasy. As Tara Janzen, she leaned further into contemporary danger, quick banter, and high-pressure suspense.
Across both names, the common thread is simple. Her characters want a way forward, whether that means recovering a family ranch, surviving a criminal pursuit, protecting someone they love, or finding a path through a world full of magic. Her stories tend to give them rough terrain, bad odds, and someone unexpectedly worth trusting.
Colorado has remained an important part of her life and imagination. It is there in the mountain settings, the ranch country, and the practical, outdoors-ready people who appear throughout her work.
