Author bio
Gina L Maxwell writes romance that knows exactly what many readers came for, heat, banter, fantasy, and big emotional swings. She lives in the upper Midwest, a fact she mentions with a sense of humor because she very clearly does not love snow or cold weather.
She has said she was a romance addict long before she was a published author. For a while, she imagined helping people escape through acting. College convinced her that was not the path, and about a decade later she found a different way to do the same kind of work, writing love stories that let readers disappear into someone else's trouble for a while.
That switch paid off fast. Her debut novel, Seducing Cinderella, arrived in 2012 and hit bestseller lists within weeks. It is still one of the clearest entry points into her work, because it has so much of what she does well, strong chemistry, playful tension, a hero with swagger, and a heroine whose emotional journey matters just as much as the heat.
She likes stories that force two people into close quarters and then lets the sparks do the rest. The Fighting for Love books use mixed martial arts, injuries, fake engagements, and marriage bargains to throw characters together. In Shameless, Ruthless, and Merciless, she leans harder into erotic romance, writing about desire, trust, kink, and the messy line between what people say they want and what they actually need.
Then she started widening the sandbox.
Her later books show how comfortable she is moving across subgenres without losing her voice. The Lost Boys novels turn Peter Pan into adult contemporary romance set in Neverland, North Carolina. The Deviant Kings trilogy shifts into romantasy, with Dark Fae royalty hidden beneath the lights of Las Vegas. With Kristin Cast, she also co-writes the Swords Tarot Towerfall novellas, which mix portals, magick, court politics, and very fast-burning romance.
Across all of that, a few patterns keep showing up. Maxwell likes protective love interests, but she also likes partners who push back. Friends become lovers. Old crushes refuse to stay buried. Fake arrangements stop feeling fake. A lot of her books ask what happens when characters finally admit the thing they have been avoiding for years.
She also seems drawn to people who are more complicated in private than they look from the outside. A fighter can be vulnerable. A prince can be lonely. A dependable good guy can have a darker streak. A woman who looks put together can still be scared to ask for what she wants.
Off the page, her bios are pleasantly down to earth. She talks about reading, writing, spending too much on planners and office supplies, hanging out with her grown children, loving her fur babies, and dreaming about a future move somewhere tropical. That small everyday detail fits her books pretty well too. Even when the setup involves fae kings, masked seductions, or a portal to another world, the emotional engine is usually simple and human, two people want each other, but telling the truth is the hard part.
