Grieving Prue Haywood sneaks into the city of Medlock to join the Ghost Guild, whose inventors place spirits inside mechanical animals. What starts as a search for her dead brother becomes a dangerous question about memory, power, and loss.
Series background & context
Ghost Machine Adventure begins with one unsettling idea and takes it seriously. In this corner of Vashti Hardy's work, inventors have learned how to trap the spirits of the dead inside animal-like machines. That means the books are full of workshops, strange devices, and mechanical creatures, but the real heart of the story is grief. The central question is simple and huge at the same time: if you had the chance to bring someone back, even imperfectly, would you take it?
WildSpark follows Prue Haywood, a mechanically gifted girl still reeling from the death of her older brother. When news reaches her farm about the Ghost Guild in the city of Medlock, she sees more than a scientific breakthrough. She sees hope. Prue heads toward the city determined to get close to the technology, learn how it works, and maybe recover something she thought was gone for good. That personal urgency keeps the story grounded even when the science-fantasy ideas get big.
This is a book about invention, but it is also a book about longing.
Medlock is a great Hardy setting. It feels busy, industrial, clever, and just a little secretive. Guild halls, rare materials, transport systems, and personifates, the animal machines animated by trapped spirits, make the place feel full of possibility. At the same time, the city is built on rules, hierarchies, and unanswered ethical questions. The more Prue learns, the more the adventure starts pressing on bigger problems about memory, identity, and what society is willing to normalize when a technology seems useful enough.
What makes Ghost Machine Adventure stand out is that it never treats its central invention as just cool scenery. Every mechanical marvel comes with emotional weight. Prue is not poking around out of idle curiosity. She is acting from love, hope, desperation, and a very human refusal to accept loss neatly. That gives the story real tension, because readers can understand exactly why she keeps pushing, even when the consequences start to look frightening.
It is thoughtful without ever slowing down too much.
If you like middle grade fantasy that mixes machinery with moral questions, this setup has a lot to offer. There are secrets, dangers, sharp reversals, and a heroine who has to think her way through a world that dazzles and unsettles her at the same time. Compared with Hardy's skyship adventures, Ghost Machine Adventure feels more intimate and more shadowed, but it still has the same appetite for wonder. It is a strong place to start if you want science-fantasy with heart, eerie ideas, and a story that keeps asking what progress is really for.
