Story guide

Ghost in the Shell Manga arcs and chapters

This set combines the original manga, the intervening 1.5 stories, and the sequel; for story chronology, read The Ghost in the Shell, then 1.5: Human-Error Processor, then 2: Man-Machine Interface.

  1. Collection 1

    The Ghost in the Shell

Shirow Masamune’s original Section 9 manga collection introduces Major Motoko Kusanagi’s cybercrime investigations, including the Puppet Master case, in a society where bodies, networks, and identity are constantly mutable.

  2. Collection 2

Ghost in the Shell 2: Man-Machine Interface

A separate sequel collection that follows Motoko and Section 9 into more elaborate inquiries involving networked minds, engineered life, and the unsettled boundary between individual consciousness and technological systems.

  3. Collection 3

Ghost in the Shell 1.5: Human-Error Processor

A bridge collection of previously uncollected Section 9 cases, positioned after the original manga and before Man-Machine Interface, involving cybercrime, malfunctioning technology, remote bodies, and digital deception.

Series overview

Ghost in the Shell Manga synopsis

In a near-future society built on cyberbrains, prosthetic bodies, and pervasive networks, Major Motoko Kusanagi and Public Security Section 9 investigate terrorism, hacking, and crimes that blur human and machine identity. The three books move from the Puppet Master case to Section 9’s intervening investigations and a denser sequel examining distributed consciousness, artificial life, and Motoko’s evolving existence.
