Series background & context
The Georgia Peach Mystery series is a cozy mystery set in Cays Mill, Georgia, where peach orchards, local traditions, and everybody's opinion seem to be part of daily life. At the center is Nola Mae Harper, who returns home to help with her family's struggling peach farm while her parents are away.
Nola quickly learns that coming home does not mean starting over quietly.
In Peaches and Scream, a poor harvest and rising expenses already have the Harper farm under strain when Nola finds a local businessman dead among the peach trees. Her teenage reputation still follows her around town, so she has plenty to prove while trying to protect her family and understand who wanted the victim dead.
The series keeps Nola rooted in the business of peaches. She helps run the orchard and later opens Peachy Keen, a shop selling preserves and other goods. That work gives the books a warm small-town texture, but it also puts her in the middle of Cays Mill's gossip, rivalries, celebrations, and grudges. Recipes appear in the books, too, adding a food-friendly touch without taking over the mysteries.
In Rest in Peach, the annual Peach Cotillion is approaching when the mother of the town's Peach Queen is murdered. Nola's friend Ginny becomes the main suspect, so Nola starts asking questions before the celebration is ruined. War and Peach moves to a mayoral race, where a farmer dies in a barn fire before revealing a damaging secret, leaving another local woman under suspicion.
Each book has a self-contained case, with Nola using persistence, familiarity with the town, and a willingness to look past first impressions. The danger is real, but the overall mood stays lighter than a hard-edged thriller. Family loyalty, friendship, Southern social rituals, and the day-to-day challenge of keeping a small business afloat matter as much as the clues.
Start with Peaches and Scream to meet Nola and see why returning to Cays Mill proves more complicated than she expected. Reading in order lets the farm, Peachy Keen, and Nola's connections around town grow naturally from one mystery to the next.
