One of Her Own

by Shawn McGuire

2021

Gemi Kittredge's morning run on Maui turns brutal when she finds a young woman she knows beaten to death on the beach. Unable to trust the police, she starts hunting for the killer herself and risks stirring up old fears.

Series background & context

The Gemi Kittredge books are the sharpest-edged corner of Shawn McGuire's fiction. These stories are set on Maui, and the setting matters in every chapter. The beaches, neighborhoods, gyms, roads, and private compounds are not just wallpaper. They shape the mood of the series, which is full of heat, beauty, and the constant sense that paradise can hide very ugly things.

At the center is Gemi Kittredge, a disciplined, stubborn woman who does not back away when people she cares about are in danger. In One of Her Own, she finds the body of a young woman she knows and starts digging because she does not trust the case to end well if she leaves it alone. That choice tells you a lot about her. Gemi is capable, guarded, and intensely loyal. Once she decides something matters, she is all in.

Family is a huge part of these books.

Her sister Ashlyn is not just side character support. Their bond drives a lot of the emotion, and the mysteries keep hitting close to home. In Out of Her League, Ashlyn's disappearance pulls Gemi into a dangerous search that brushes up against organized crime. In Over Her Head, the stakes widen again, with missing women, old trauma, and the darker parts of island life crowding in. The cases feel personal because, for Gemi, they usually are.

That is what gives this series its particular energy. It is not cozy village crime. It is crime fiction with a strong emotional center. There are still character relationships to enjoy and a continuing arc to follow, but the threats are heavier, the danger is more direct, and the fallout tends to linger. McGuire lets Gemi carry that weight instead of pretending she can shake it off by the next morning.

The series also does a nice job balancing toughness with care. Gemi can handle herself, but the books are not just about fighting back. They are also about protection, trust, recovery, and what it means to build safety after violence. As the series goes on, that part becomes even clearer, especially as the story expands beyond one murder and into a broader web of missing women, old secrets, and people exploiting the vulnerable.

If you want a Shawn McGuire series with more bite, this is the one. The mysteries move fast, the island setting is vivid, and Gemi is the kind of lead who keeps going even when common sense says she should stop. Which, of course, is exactly why the books work.
