Author bio
Gary Ponzo was born and raised in Brooklyn, then moved to Phoenix at seventeen, where he has lived for most of his adult life. That New York beginning still shows up all through his work, especially in the mix of family loyalty, streetwise banter, and uneasy brushes with organized crime that shape the Nick Bracco books.
He didn't start with novels.
Ponzo first wrote short stories, partly because he wanted to learn the craft and partly because he wanted to earn publication credits the hard way. His fiction appeared in places including Amazing Journeys Magazine and Potpourri, and two of those stories were nominated for the Pushcart Prize.
In 2001, he turned to a longer project that had been sitting with him for years. As a teenager, he worked in his father's candy store in Brooklyn, where Sicilian regulars helped create a strange mix of comfort and menace around everyday life. Ponzo later used that memory as the seed for A Touch of Deceit, a thriller about FBI agent Nick Bracco and the Mafia-connected cousin he cannot quite escape.
That first novel took him years to finish, and it gave him a clear lane. A Touch of Deceit won the 2009 Southwest Writers Novel Contest in the thriller category, then launched the Nick Bracco series in 2010. Readers who stick with the series tend to come back for the same reason: Ponzo likes to put an upright lawman in situations where the clean answer is useless. In books like A Touch of Revenge, A Touch of Greed, and A Touch of Malice, Nick keeps finding that the fastest way to stop a terror cell or cartel is to work alongside people the FBI would rather keep at arm's length.
That tension never really left his fiction.
Even when Ponzo steps away from Nick Bracco, he usually keeps the pressure high. Saving the World moves into psychological and supernatural territory, with a grieving psychiatrist and a young woman whose warnings may or may not mean the end of everything. Flight 12 shows he can work short form too, turning a vanished overnight flight to Rome into a tight mystery. More recently, The Son's Revenge, written with Eddie Johnson, follows a young man who learns his mother's death was not what he had always been told.
Ponzo's work has picked up a few notable markers along the way. The Nick Bracco books have sold widely, A Touch of Deceit was discussed at one point as a possible television series, and the audiobook of that first novel received an Audie Award nomination for its narration. Still, the appeal of his writing is pretty down to earth: brisk pacing, clear stakes, and characters who get cornered into bad choices.
He has long made his home in Phoenix with his wife Jennifer and their family. When he is not writing, he has said he enjoys running, golf, reading, and time with the people closest to him. That feels about right for his books too, hard-driving on the surface, but usually built around loyalty, family, and the cost of trying to protect both.
