Garrison Allen Books in Order

Garrison Allen was born in East Tawas, Michigan, on June 23, 1939. Readers also know him as Gary Amo, the name he used for his darker suspense novels. Later, he built his writing life in Southern California, where he became part of the local mystery scene and was active enough to serve as president of the Southern California chapter of Mystery Writers of America.

He took the long road to print. Before his first novel was published, he had spent about 17 years writing novels, screenplays, and short stories. He also worked as a political writer for the Palos Verdes Peninsula News, which helps explain why the legal side of his suspense often feels lived in instead of borrowed.

That long apprenticeship finally paid off with Come Nightfall in 1990, published as Gary Amo. The book introduced Los Angeles deputy district attorney Kate Gallagher and went on to earn an Edgar Award nomination for Best First Novel. Allen once described it as a last shot after years of trying to break through, which gives that debut a little extra weight.

Allen did not stay in one lane.

As Gary Amo, he wrote books like Come Darkness, Silent Night, and Creeping Shadows. These are the tighter, darker side of his work. They tend to center on smart women under pressure, with the danger coming from the law, from intimate betrayal, or from the feeling that trouble is much closer than it first appears.

Under the name Garrison Allen, he shifted into a very different mood with the Big Mike mysteries: Desert Cat, Royal Cat, Stable Cat, Baseball Cat, Dinosaur Cat, and Movie Cat. Those books follow Penelope Warren, an ex-Marine who runs a mystery bookstore in Empty Creek, Arizona, with help from her cat Mycroft, better known as Big Mike. Readers who enjoy them usually like the oddball desert-town setting, the themed local events, and the way Allen lets the cat be part of the fun without making the books feel like a gimmick.

He liked strong setups.

Again and again, his fiction drops ordinary people into bad situations and then watches how they push back. In the Kate Gallagher books, the pressure comes from courtroom stakes, personal loyalty, and physical danger getting tangled together. In the Big Mike novels, murder lands in the middle of fairs, horse shows, fossil digs, ballgames, and movie shoots. The tone changes, but the engine is similar: curious people, bad secrets, and a problem that refuses to stay tidy.

Allen also seems to have been a steady presence in the Southern California crime-writing world. He read from unpublished work at local events, signed books in area stores, and moved in the orbit of fellow mystery writers and specialty booksellers. That part matters. His career does not read like an overnight success story. It looks more like years of persistence, local community, and a writer who kept going until the books finally found their place.

He died on July 14, 2012, at 73. His shelf is not huge, but it is easy to see the appeal. On one side, you have the Gary Amo thrillers, leaner and darker. On the other, you have the Garrison Allen mysteries, stranger, warmer, and happily built around a cat with real personality. Taken together, they show a writer who could move between suspense and offbeat humor while keeping the stakes human.
