The Gargoyles series takes a classic monster image and gives it a full paranormal-romance engine. These are not decorative stone figures perched on rooftops for atmosphere. In Christine Warren's version, gargoyles are ancient guardians, bound to stand watch against demonic forces that would gladly tear the world apart. They sleep in stone until they are called, and once they wake, everything gets louder, stranger, and much more dangerous.

Heart of Stone starts with Ella Harrow, a museum employee whose ordinary life ends the moment a gargoyle named Kees comes back to life. That first book lays out the big frame for the series: demons are real, the threat is ongoing, and the gargoyles are part of a much older fight than most humans can imagine. It also introduces one of Warren's favorite rhythms, a practical modern woman gets shoved into supernatural chaos and has to decide very quickly whether to run, help, or kiss the monster trying to keep her alive.

Once the stone starts cracking, normal life is over.

The books that follow keep that structure while widening the world. Stone Cold Lover and Hard as a Rock show more of the network around the gargoyles, including the women and magical families tied to their work. The romances are central, but there is always an outside pressure pushing on them, demon attacks, hidden enemies, old obligations, and the constant problem of protecting people who were never meant to know this world existed. Warren likes pairing very old, very powerful heroes with women who are not easily intimidated, so the chemistry usually comes from friction as much as instant attraction.

By the time you get to Rocked by Love, Hard to Handle, and Hard Breaker, the series feels bigger and more confident in its mythology. The guardians are still battling demonic threats, but the emotional stakes get more personal. Family lines matter. Ancient duties matter. So do secrets, scars, and the fear that loving someone can turn them into a target. Even when a book leans into a familiar romance shape, including a strong Beauty and the Beast flavor in Hard to Handle, the larger supernatural war keeps the tension moving.

The tone sits in a sweet spot between dark and playful. There are demons and real danger here, but Warren writes with a contemporary ease that keeps the books moving. The gargoyles are fearsome, but they are also possessive, bewildered by modern life, and completely sincere once they fall. The heroines tend to meet that intensity with sarcasm, stubbornness, or sheer refusal to be managed, which gives the series a lot of spark.

If you want paranormal romance with ongoing lore, action-heavy stakes, and heroes who are literally carved for the job, Gargoyles is a good fit. Start with Heart of Stone and expect the world to expand from there. Each book gives you a new couple, but the larger battle never really goes away, which is part of the fun.
