Series background & context
Game of Gods is JA Huss's adult fantasy romance series about a society powered by sacrifice and the people who begin to question that bargain. In Tau City, a substance or force called spark provides the foundation of modern comfort and political authority. It grows inside young women, making their bodies central to an arrangement presented as necessary for everyone else. The books follow romance, rebellion and the search for truth across a world whose accepted rules may conceal something very different.
Sparktopia introduces the Spark Maidens, chosen for a ritual called the Extraction. Once a decade, one young woman enters a mysterious god's tower and never returns. The others receive a privileged life, with enough luxury and attention to make selection seem desirable despite the risk. That apparent calculation has helped the system endure. The majority can imagine themselves among the survivors while leaving the cost to the one who is taken.
Clara Birch is one of the remaining Maidens when the expected rules change. More women are summoned, and the protection they thought they had begins to disappear. Clara hopes her fiancé Finn Scott, whose father is connected to the Extraction, will help her. Meanwhile, Jasina Bell is involved in the rebellion forming among people excluded from the city's comfort. Their different positions put personal ambition and loyalty beside the question of who benefits from the god's demands.
A comfortable bargain looks different from the place of sacrifice.
Clara's encounter with Tyse complicates what she has been taught about the tower and the power inside it. The story expands beyond a single city's ceremony into a larger conflict involving secrets across time and space. Its romantic relationships are part of that expansion, because deciding whom to trust can also mean deciding which version of the world to accept. The characters' understanding changes as the distance between public belief and private experience grows.
Godslayer continues the consequences of those discoveries. Tyse and Clara face a world of augmented humans, while Jasina and Finn pursue the wider problem of the towers and the Extractions. The journey brings neglected communities, ruined cities and artificial intelligence into the series' mix of fantasy and technology. What appears to be divine power has to be examined through more than one set of assumptions, and rebellion doesn't guarantee agreement among the people carrying it forward.
Read Sparktopia before Godslayer. The novels form a continuing story with intertwined characters and mysteries. Expect explicit romance, political manipulation and questions about sacrifice, rather than a simple contest between an unquestioned god and obedient followers. The central conflict asks how much a society is willing to conceal to preserve comfort, and what its people will risk once the cost becomes impossible to ignore.
