Changing the Play
by Julia Kelly
2017
Sports agent Rachel Pollard has built her career on strict rules and zero distractions, especially when a star NFL client’s draft prospects are on the line. Then Nick Ruben, the persistent TV reporter who once ignored her in high school, turns up needing a career saving exclusive and a second chance.
Series background & context
The Game Changer series showcases Julia Kelly's contemporary alter ego, Julia Blake, and her love of the high pressure world of professional sports. Instead of ballrooms and war rooms, these stories unfold in locker rooms, press conferences, and late night phone calls between people whose jobs revolve around the game.
In Changing the Play, sports agent Rachel Pollard has built a reputation for spotting untested talent and keeping her clients out of trouble. Her latest prospect is on the cusp of an NFL career, and Rachel is determined to protect him from any scandal that could tank his draft stock. The last thing she needs is Nick Ruben, a persistent television reporter who was once her high school crush and who now wants an exclusive interview she cannot afford to grant.
The book mixes second chance romance with workplace tension. Rachel has carved out a place in a male dominated industry by being tougher and more prepared than everyone around her, while Nick is juggling his own job insecurity as layoffs loom at his network. Their chemistry is immediate, but so are the conflicts over ethics, privacy, and whose story gets told.
Even though this is a sexy, fast paced contemporary romance, Kelly brings the same interest in character and professional detail that runs through her historical work. The series world leaves plenty of room for other agents, reporters, and athletes to step forward, but you can start and finish Changing the Play on its own and still feel like you have had a complete, satisfying story.
