Their forced partnership gives the book its shape, while attacks on the ranch keep the pressure high.

The second book, King Of Hearts, shifts the focus to Wade McCord. After losing his share of the family ranch years earlier, Wade has remade himself as a lawman, but the past still rides with him. His undercover hunt for a killer takes him to a stagecoach station in southern Missouri, where Lottie Hammond is doing everything she can to protect the two children in her care and keep her own secrets buried. Wade is supposed to be there for justice, not romance, which of course makes the emotional stakes even messier.

What links the two books is not a big cliffhanger or a sweeping epic plot. It is the way one bad choice echoes through families and futures. The heroes are men who have been humbled. The heroines are practical women who know exactly what can be lost if they trust the wrong person. Pat Pritchard keeps the tone warm but not soft. There are poker tables and pistols, but there are also kitchens, porches, barns, and the daily work of keeping people fed and safe.

That balance is the real appeal.

If you like western romance with a little danger, a little secrecy, and a lot of emotional cleanup, this series fits nicely. The books stand on their own, but they read best in order because Wade's story in King Of Hearts grows out of the same long-ago gamble that sets Luck Of The Draw in motion. It is a short series, just two books, but it has a full, lived-in feel. You get family tension, frontier atmosphere, and romances that ask whether people can become more than the worst mistake they ever made.
