Gamble on Judgment Books in Order

Gamble on Judgment is one of Zina Abbott's more tightly connected two-book arcs. The series follows Harry Bradford, a scarred lawyer and sometime detective, and Stella Schoenfeld, a woman trying to untangle family danger, public scandal, and the fallout from violence that has already marked her life.

It starts in cattle-drive era Kansas and then shifts east.

In Abilene Gamble, Harry and Stella meet in a rough frontier boomtown full of drovers, drifters, and men looking for advantage. Stella is searching for her runaway brother, Nathan. Harry has reasons of his own for tracking the same man. Their partnership is uneasy from the start, because both are carrying private motives, and neither can fully trust what the other wants.

The second book, Indianapolis Justice, turns that personal conflict into a courtroom fight. The story moves to Indianapolis, where Nathan faces false murder charges and Harry is pushed into defending him. That change of setting is one of the best things about the series. The books keep the emotional tension of a romance, but they also make room for legal pressure, damaged reputations, and the harsh judgment of society.

Harry is not a polished hero, and that is the point. His war injuries shape how others see him and how he sees himself. Stella has her own scars, visible and otherwise. Together, they make the series feel less like a simple courtship and more like a hard-won attempt to build trust.

If you like historical romance with investigations, trials, and a little more grit than the average mail-order story, this is a good place to look. The stakes are not just emotional. They are legal, social, and deeply personal.
