San Francisco does a lot of the heavy lifting. Day uses the city before and after the 1906 earthquake as more than a backdrop. You get boarding houses, cable cars, steep streets, Chinatown, spiritualists, waterfront intrigue, and the chaos of a place rebuilding itself in public. Fire and Fog drops Fremont right into the earthquake and its aftermath, and that mix of history and danger becomes a signature of the series. The books feel lived in, not dressed up for effect.

The series also widens as it goes. The Bohemian Murders takes Fremont to the Monterey Bay area and a temporary post at Point Pinos Lighthouse, where a body in the water pulls her into an artists' colony full of secrets. Emperor Norton's Ghost brings her back to a rebuilding San Francisco and into the world of seances, mediums, and the city's lingering legends. In Death Train to Boston the danger moves onto the rails, while Beacon Street Mourning turns personal as Fremont returns east to face family history.

Order matters more than you might think.

Each book has its own case, so they are readable on their own, but the character growth lands better if you start with The Strange Files of Fremont Jones and go forward. Fremont changes from a young woman proving she can live independently into someone who can choose work, love, and loyalty on her own terms. If you like historical mysteries with a strong sense of place, a feminist streak, light romantic tension, and enough danger to keep things moving, this series is an easy one to settle into.
