Italian Shoes

by Henning Mankell

2009

Fredrik Welin, a disgraced former surgeon, lives alone on an icy island, measuring out his days with rigid routines. When a woman he once abandoned appears, asking him to keep an old promise, he is forced off the island and into a reckoning with love, guilt, and age.

Series background & context

The Fredrik Welin novels are quieter and more introspective than Mankells crime fiction. They follow a disgraced former orthopaedic surgeon who has exiled himself to a small island in the Stockholm archipelago, where he lives alone with his aging dog and cat, swimming every day in the freezing sea.

In Italian Shoes, Fredriks routines are broken when he spots a woman walking across the winter ice toward his cottage. She is Harriet, the lover he abandoned decades earlier without explanation. Terminally ill and still furious, she demands that he keep a promise he made long ago and take her to a remote pond from her childhood. Their journey pulls Fredrik back into contact with mainland Sweden, a runaway young woman, and memories he has tried hard to bury.

The novel is less a thriller than a road trip through regret. As Fredrik drives Harriet north, improvises care for her failing body, and learns the fate of people he once knew, he begins to test whether it is still possible to repair old damage. The harsh winter landscape mirrors his state of mind, but small acts of kindness and unexpected connections hint that change is not entirely out of reach.

After the Fire returns to the island years later. Fredrik is now seventy when he wakes one night to find his beloved house ablaze. He escapes with his life and two left boots, but everything else he owns is gone. While the police quietly suspect him of burning his own home for insurance, he moves into a shabby caravan and starts to examine what, if anything, has been worth keeping from his old life.

A curious young journalist, Lisa, arrives to write about the fire and refuses to let Fredrik retreat into silence. His daughter Louise, whose existence he discovered late, comes and goes with plans for the property and frustrations of her own. Another house on the islands burns, and what begins as a story about loss grows into a modest mystery about arson, trust, and how well neighbours really know one another.

Across both books the crimes are small compared with the emotional stakes. The real questions are about ageing, failure, forgiveness, and what it means to start over when most of your choices are behind you. The island setting, with its ice, storms, and short summers, becomes a character of its own. Readers who like reflective novels rooted in character and place, with just enough suspense to keep the pages turning, tend to find Fredrik Welins story quietly absorbing.
