Another house on the islands burns, and what begins as a story about loss grows into a modest mystery about arson, trust, and how well neighbours really know one another.

Across both books the crimes are small compared with the emotional stakes. The real questions are about ageing, failure, forgiveness, and what it means to start over when most of your choices are behind you. The island setting, with its ice, storms, and short summers, becomes a character of its own.
