A Drop of Fortune

by Danielle Garrett

2024

Freed from years of service to a corrupt king, witch Evelyn Rosewood sets out to heal a blighted harbor town. With only an enchanted satchel, an owl familiar, and a grumpy herb merchant, she has a lot to prove.

Series background & context

Four Corners Coven moves Danielle Garrett into cozy fantasy romance territory, and it is a nice fit for her. Instead of a hidden magical town in the modern world, this series steps into a secondary world where old magic still shapes daily life. The tone is softer, more romantic, and more openly about healing than detection, though there is still tension running underneath.

A Drop of Fortune introduces Evelyn Rosewood, a witch who has spent years in forced service to a corrupt king. When she gets the chance to claim her freedom, she takes it and heads for a harborside town suffering under a strange blight. That setup gives the story two strong engines at once. Evelyn is trying to build a life that belongs to her, and the town needs help badly enough that her fresh start cannot stay private for long.

The world here is one of the series' biggest draws. Garrett keeps it accessible, but it still feels rich with history, magic, trade, and local suspicion. Evelyn arrives with an enchanted satchel, a feathered familiar, and a lot of reason not to trust anyone too quickly. The town, meanwhile, is trying to decide whether she is a solution, a threat, or both.

That uncertainty feeds the romance as well. Evelyn's bond with the local herb merchant has the classic cozy-fantasy appeal of warmth growing slowly in hard soil. He is useful, guarded, and not always easy. She is smart, weary, and determined to help even when it would be safer to walk away. Their dynamic gives the book a gentle pull without losing the larger question of whether the town itself can be healed.

Compared with Garrett's murder-heavy series, Four Corners Coven is quieter in the best way. The stakes are still real, but they are tied to restoration, belonging, and what it means to choose a future after years of survival mode.

If you like fantasy with magic, work, community, and a romance that grows alongside the rebuilding of a troubled place, this series is well worth a try.
