The Foul Lady Fortune duology returns to Chloe Gong's Secret Shanghai world, but the time has moved forward and the spotlight belongs to Rosalind Lang. It is 1931, several years after the events of Our Violent Ends, and Shanghai is facing civil war, growing foreign aggression, and a new kind of covert conflict.

Rosalind survived scarlet fever through an experiment that changed her life. She no longer ages, does not sleep, and heals from injuries that would kill anyone else. In Foul Lady Fortune, Rosalind is assigned to work with Orion Hong, another spy with his own secrets and loyalties. To investigate a string of murders, the pair must pose as a married couple. Their mission begins as a cover story and turns into a dangerous search for the truth, with the threat of Japanese invasion and the political future of China never far from view.

The sequel, Foul Heart Huntsman, follows Rosalind in 1932 after her identity as Lady Fortune has been exposed. Orion has been taken, his memories of her have been wiped, and Rosalind has to find a way to reach him while the danger facing Shanghai grows more urgent. The story takes her beyond the city and forces old enemies and old friends into uneasy cooperation.

This is historical fantasy with spy missions, false identities, chemical weapons, and a slow-burn romance between people who have every reason to hold back. Rosalind's immortality gives the books a supernatural edge, but the series stays grounded in the choices she makes for her country, her found family, and the person she loves.
